Go Canada Go!!!

February 15, 2010

All of a sudden, I’m filled with Olympic Spirit. It might have something to do with the fabulous opening ceremony dress rehearsal I was able to attend the other night. Wow, it was magnificant and so so much larger than life. Hmm, let’s see how many superlatives I can fit into this post. Seriously, what you see on TV is a pale comparison. If anyone ever has a chance to attend something like that live in the country where they live, I say GO. You will feel so proud, although, at one point (when the Canadian Prime Minister was speaking) one of the kids I had in tow observed that it was “just like a giant (school) assembly”.

Speaking of kids and school, mine have the next two weeks off, and I’m hoping we’ll take in a selection of the events that are going on. It reminds me a lot of EXPO 86 in many ways, all jammed into a two week period, of course with the overlay of competitive sporting events.

We do have tickets to attend one session of curling – that’s what the family wanted to see – good Canadians that we all are. I’d like to go to a short track speedskating session, and maybe a medal ceremony – but I’m not sure that my finances can handle it, and there aren’t any tickets left anyway. Other than that, we’re planning on going to a play, maybe hitting a few concerts, and also checking out some of the pavilions that are set up around the downtown core. All that stuff is completely free and open to the public. There are also a bunch of other events and activities that are not officially associated with the Olympics that happen to be taking place at the same time.

The 10th Anniversary ATC exhibition that I’m organizing is one example – well that’ll be on during the Paralympics. The Port Moody Wearable Arts show where I have two pieces on display is another example – one of the categories is even “Olympic”. There’s just so much going on, its really quite overwhelming.
